We use language as an instrument to communicate with each other. It is the most powerful tool used by the literate and powerful to maintain class divisions and to reinforce prejudices.

The illustrative quotations used in dictionaries for the words ‘white’ and ‘black’ exemplify how language corrupts thought. By reinforcing the complex system of negative myths and stereotypes we continue to associate the word ‘white’ with all things pure, innocent, noble and good, while the word ‘black’ is perceived as being evil, untrustworthy, fearsome and negative.
